Why is it Important to choose Corrugated Packaging, over other packaging materials?

The most important and essential aspect of packaging, is to ensure that the goods, whether fragile or not, perishable or not, are kept intact, as they flow through the chain of supply. Corrugated boxes are made up of corrugated paperboard that contains rows of air columns. The columns make the paper stronger than average cardboard, thereby offering better protection to the goods.

Due to their characteristics - reduced weight, high mechanical resistance, rigidity and strength, good protection of the products even in conditions of low temperature and humidity, quality product display - corrugated cardboard packaging satisfies event the highest demands of the different industrial branches.

What are the benefits of Corrugated Packaging?

Among the many important advantages that corrugated packaging offers, some of the important ones are -

  1. The rows of air columns, of corrugated cardboard, act as a stable cushion for any items inside of the cardboard box, keeping items safe during long-distance transportation, shipping and handling. The ridges inside offer strength and flexibility, as usually important for packaging.

  2. The thickness of corrugated cardboard can be adjusted to make it a perfect fit for any product. These boxes are available in a range of shapes, sizes, designs, suiting the requirements of varied number of clients.  Thus, they serve as the most diverse packaging solution, being easily customisable to cater to different clients.

  3. The light weight of cardboard boxes makes them easy to handle and move while packaging, loading and unloading, while also keeping them strong enough to protect the goods.

  4. Also, corrugated boxes keep the moisture away from the products, which is especially important for perishable food products, which may need to withstand long shipping times.

  5. Branding is an important part of any industry, and corrugated packaging facilitates branding of products. With the wide array of printing options available, the client can print contents as well as promote his company through corrugated packaging.

  6. Corrugated cardboard boxes are some of the least expensive cartons available, making them cost effective. They don’t have high labour costs or require expensive tools to manufacture. Apart from that, corrugated boxes are fairly easy to recycle and the boxes can be folded back up and stored away for later us, making them sustainable.

What are Flutes in a corrugated box?

Flutes are essentially the reinforcement that makes up the cardboard. They run parallel to the depth

of the container and give it its rigidity and crushing/stacking strength. Other than providing stacking

strength, flutes also provide insulation, which protects products from sudden temperature changes in

the surrounding environment. Generally speaking, larger flutes like A & B profile provide greater

strength and cushioning, while smaller flute profiles like D & E provide better printability and flexibility

in folding. We specialise in A,B and C flute.

What are the types of Flutes and what are their advantages?

What types of papers are used for manufacturing corrugated boxes ?

There are 2 types of paper which are commonly used which are Kraft paper and Duplex paper.

What is a Kraft paper and what are the advantages of using it?

Kraft paper has a high elasticity and high tear resistance, designed for packaging products with

high demands for strength and durability. They are commonly found in a golden brown colour and

they have higher Grams per Square Meter (GSM), which makes the paper very hard and strong.

Kraft paper is also really cheap and economical for packing purposes.

What is a Duplex paper and what are the advantages of using it?

Duplex paper is a type of paper used for the printing of decals in which a thin, water-absorbent

tissue is laminated to a heavier stock. Unlike Kraft paper, duplex paper is more suited for printing

and designing as this paper is of a bright white colour, which makes other colours stand out on it.

But compared to Kraft paper, the GSM is much lower and also these papers are more expensive to

use.

Which are the 2 types of commonly used Printing process used in corrugated boxes?

The most commonly used printing processes are Stereo Printing and Offset Printing.

Stereo Printing This type of printing is usually done of a corrugated box which has a

Brown Kraft Paper on the top most layer. In this type of printing only 2-3 colours can be

used as it uses a Rubber Stereo Similar to a rubber stamp) which is completely

customisable to cater the customer’s requirement. This type of printing is really

economical and cheap though there are limitations on the number of colours that can

be used.

Offset Printing This type of printing is usually done of a corrugated box which has a

White Duplex Paper on the top most layer. In this type of printing you can use any

amount of colours unlike Stereo Printing which is completely customisable to cater the

customer’s requirement. In this process a Positive has to be made with a CDR file of the

design to be printed. When it comes to the Design prospective it looks much better than

Stereo Printing and more attractive. Although it’s a more expensive printing process

hence will bring up the average cost of the corrugated  box. Offset printing can also be

done on a Corrugated box which has a Brown Kraft Paper on top.

What are the different grades of boxes under Corrugated Packaging?

There can be multiple layers or “Ply” in the corrugated box depending upon the product’s requirement. The higher the burst strength (the higher the number of layers), the more rigidity the box offers. However, some of the basic examples of Ply boxes that would be available are-

  • 3 Ply Corrugated Boxes are usually used for packaging of retail products like meat, fish, biscuits, bottled water etc. and other smaller goods, weighing under 3-4 kgs. However, if higher Grams per Square Meter (GSM) paper is used to make the box, then a 3 ply box can take up to 10-20 kgs of products as well.

  • 5 and 7 Ply Corrugated Boxes provide an extra cushioning for more protection, because of the higher burst strength.

They are used it in  the following industries for packaging -

Shipper packing or boxes, to pack goods for exporting in shipper containers. Domestic Appliances such as Televisions, Air          conditioning systems, Microwaves, Refrigerators, etc.

  • 9 Ply Corrugated Boxes are used mainly for packing industrial machinery parts and engineering parts. Given the nature of these goods, they require stronger boxes, and therefore the burst strength of the box is always higher than the other boxes. These boxes are extremely heavy cause of the high number of layers.

What are the different types of Corrugated Packing options and their used and advantages?

  • Universal Box –

This is the most common style of box, and typically what you

picture in your head when you think of a package. The

advantage of this box is that it is extremely easy to manufacture

and is highly economical.

  • All Flap Meeting Box/Central Flap Meeting Box –

This is similar to a universal box. The only difference is that all flaps are

the same length, and the two outer length flaps are one-half the container’s

width, so that they meet at the centre of the box when closed. The

advantage of packaging goods in this type of a box is that the extra length

of the flaps provide more cushioning, which in-turn provides more protection.

  • Bottom Interlocking Box -

These types of boxes are regularly used by customers to

avoid cost of packing materials like gum and other

adhesives‚ so overall cost of packaging is saved. These

boxes are comparatively more rigid and stronger.

  • Die Cut Corrugated box –

This box is use mainly for attractive product packaging. It is made

in 3ply‚ 5ply‚ 7ply by punching machines and die making. These

types of boxes are used for industry products like glass‚ eggs‚

pharmaceuticals‚ ceramics, etc. A die cut box has a unique design

that requires angular‚ circular‚ or other unusual cuts‚ slots‚ and

scores. Die cut boxes may also feature perforated lines‚ ventilation

holes‚ or access holes.

  • Top and Bottom Box -

These boxes usually consist of top and bottom pieces that fit over

each other. "Telescope Style" generally describes a box with a

bottom tray along with a top lid that covers it from up. These

types of boxes are usually used as a shoe box, and also for packing

several meat and fish products or marine products for exporting.

An advantage of these boxes is that there is an easy access to

the product as the entire top part of the box opens up.

  • Pizza Box -

Corrugated cardboard insulation is ideal for food transportation,

and its other properties make it a perfect choice for fast-foods.

Its rib-like design allows heat to move in a circle within the box

without escaping. Simultaneously, it prevents moisture from

building and making the internal contents all soggy.

  • Partitions (or Dividers) -

This is an additional corrugated sheet provided inside a box which

provides a separate cell for each item in a box. It is primarily used

for packaging of glassware or other fragile items.
